You may have spent a great deal of time choosing the perfect recurve or compound bow for you but have you considered which type of arrows to use with it? Choosing the right arrow type is essential to your success and needs to match your bow correctly and be suitable for the type of archery you will be doing. Are you going to be using the bow chiefly for hunting deer or other animals or for target shooting? What options are there for arrows and which ones are best for you?
Wooden Arrows
Wood, of course, is the traditional material for arrows but nowadays wood arrows are used mainly by novices and for long bow competitions. They are not popular for other uses because they don’t give consistent results due to variation in the shape and weight of the arrows. Wood arrows can break easily and have a tendency to warp but they are inexpensive and are good for beginners to practise with.
Fiberglass Arrows
Fiberglass arrows are consistent as they are much more uniform but they are brittle and easily broken. They are a good choice for hunting and can be fitted easily to various draw lengths.
Aluminium Arrows
Aluminium arrows are a great deal stronger than either fiberglass or wooden arrows. They are uniformly manufactured so are consistent and reliable. They are made in a wide variety of types and sizes so you will be able to find one appropriate for your needs. Aluminium arrows are reliable and consistent which makes them a good choice for use while hunting or in competitions and they are made with interchangeable arrowheads. They are more expensive than wood or fiberglass arrows so may not be a good idea of you are still losing a lot of arrows. In this case you should choose a cheaper arrow until you’ve had more practise!
Carbon Composite Arrows
These types of arrows are used by more serious archers because they are efficient, durable and high speed. They are manufactured with a core of aluminium with an outer coating of carbon composite material and are very strong so do not break easily like fiberglass arrows. They are undoubtedly the finest arrows you can buy but they are expensive so are generally used only by serious archers.
Other Things to Think About
Fletches currently are typically manufactured from synthetic or plastic material although traditional feather fletches are available. Stability is given to the arrow by the fletches during its flight and helps to boost speed. Try out some different types to see how the different types feel in use. The point also needs to be considered. The point used on a hunting arrow, for instance, needs to be specially designed. Finally, buy a good quiver to protect your arrows and some spare draw strings.
